A luxury watch is only as good as the materials from which it is made. From the case that protects the delicate movement to the crystal that covers the dial, every material choice impacts the watch’s durability, appearance, and long-term value. At GATTI, we are committed to using premium materials that ensure our watches not only look exceptional but also stand the test of time. In this article, we’ll explore two of the most important materials in watchmaking — 316L stainless steel and sapphire crystal — and explain why they matter.
316L Stainless Steel: The Gold Standard for Watch Cases
What is 316L Stainless Steel?
316L stainless steel is a grade of austenitic stainless steel that contains chromium (16-18%), nickel (10-14%), and molybdenum (2-3%). The “L” designation stands for “low carbon,” meaning the carbon content is limited to a maximum of 0.03%. This specific alloy composition gives 316L steel its exceptional properties, making it the material of choice for premium watch cases, bracelets, and components.
316L steel is also known as “marine grade” stainless steel because of its excellent resistance to saltwater corrosion — it is the same material used in surgical instruments, medical implants, marine equipment, and food processing machinery. If it’s safe for surgical implants and durable enough for marine environments, you can trust it for your watch case.
Why 316L Steel is Ideal for Watches
Exceptional corrosion resistance:
The chromium content in 316L steel forms a protective oxide layer on the surface that prevents rust and corrosion. The addition of molybdenum further enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in saltwater and chloride environments. This means your GATTI watch will maintain its beautiful finish even with regular exposure to sweat, water, and the elements.
Durability and hardness:
316L steel is strong and durable, with good resistance to impacts and scratches. While not as hard as ceramic or tungsten carbide, 316L steel is more practical for everyday wear because it can be polished and refinished if scratches do occur. A quality steel watch can look like new for decades with proper care and occasional polishing.
Hypoallergenic properties:
Thanks to its low carbon content and high nickel and chromium content, 316L steel is generally hypoallergenic and well-tolerated by people with sensitive skin or metal allergies. Unlike cheaper base metal watches that can cause skin irritation and discoloration, a 316L steel watch is safe for all-day, everyday wear.
Aesthetic versatility:
316L steel takes a beautiful finish — whether polished to a mirror shine, brushed for a matte texture, or bead-blasted for a modern look. It can also be plated with gold, rose gold, or black PVD coatings for different aesthetic options. The neutral silver tone of stainless steel complements every outfit and style, from casual to formal.
Value retention:
Stainless steel watches tend to hold their value better than watches made from cheaper materials. A well-maintained steel watch can last for generations and may even appreciate in value if it becomes a collectible piece.
How GATTI Uses 316L Steel
Every GATTI watch features a case and caseback crafted from premium 316L stainless steel. We use solid steel construction (not plated base metal) for durability and quality. Our steel cases are available in several finishes:
- Polished: A mirror-like shine that reflects light beautifully, perfect for dress and formal watches
- Brushed: A matte, satin-like texture that hides minor scratches and gives a more casual, understated look
- Two-tone: A combination of polished and brushed surfaces for added visual interest and depth
- Rose gold PVD: A physical vapor deposition coating that gives the warm, luxurious appearance of rose gold at a fraction of the cost, with excellent durability
- Black PVD: A sleek, modern black coating that adds edge and contemporary style
Our signature tonneau (barrel-shaped) cases are precision-machined from solid 316L steel billets, with carefully proportioned curves and angles that provide both ergonomic comfort and distinctive style. Every case is carefully finished and inspected before assembly to ensure the highest quality standards.
Sapphire Crystal: The Ultimate Watch Glass
What is Sapphire Crystal?
Despite its name, sapphire crystal used in watches is not actually a crystal — it is a synthetic, single-crystal form of aluminum oxide (corundum), the same mineral as natural sapphires and rubies. Synthetic sapphire is produced through a process called the Verneuil method (or flame fusion), in which aluminum oxide powder is melted at extremely high temperatures (over 2,000°C) and allowed to crystallize into a boule (cylindrical crystal). This boule is then sliced, ground, and polished into ultra-thin watch crystals.
Sapphire crystal is the hardest transparent material available for watch crystals, rating 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness (diamond is 10). For comparison, mineral glass rates 5-6, and acrylic (plastic) rates 2-3. This exceptional hardness means sapphire crystal is extremely scratch-resistant — in fact, only diamond, moissanite, and a few other very hard materials can scratch it.
Why Sapphire Crystal is the Premium Choice
Unmatched scratch resistance:
This is the primary advantage of sapphire crystal. A sapphire crystal watch can be worn every day, in virtually any environment, without worrying about scratches from keys, desks, countertops, or other everyday hazards. While mineral glass will develop fine scratches over time that can affect visibility and appearance, sapphire crystal will remain crystal clear for years — often for the entire lifetime of the watch.
Exceptional clarity:
Synthetic sapphire is optically pure and completely transparent, with excellent light transmission properties. This means the dial is clearly visible with minimal distortion or glare, even from angles. High-quality sapphire crystals are also often coated with anti-reflective (AR) coatings on one or both sides to further reduce glare and improve readability in bright sunlight.
Durability and longevity:
Sapphire crystal is not only scratch-resistant but also highly durable and resistant to impacts (though it can shatter if subjected to a sharp, hard blow — it is hard but somewhat brittle, like glass). A sapphire crystal watch will maintain its pristine appearance for decades, contributing to the watch’s long-term value and collectibility.
Chemical resistance:
Sapphire crystal is chemically inert and resistant to most chemicals, solvents, and cosmetics. It won’t cloud, discolor, or degrade from exposure to perfumes, lotions, cleaning products, or environmental pollutants — a significant advantage over acrylic crystals, which can be damaged by chemicals.
Value and prestige:
Sapphire crystal is a hallmark of quality watchmaking, found on virtually all luxury watches priced above $500. Its presence signals that the manufacturer has invested in premium materials and quality construction. Watches with sapphire crystal generally command higher resale values than comparable watches with mineral glass.

The GATTI Approach to Crystals
At GATTI, we believe that a premium watch deserves a premium crystal. While some brands in our price point cut corners by using mineral glass, we equip our watches with high-quality mineral glass that provides excellent clarity and good scratch resistance for everyday wear. Our double-sided skeleton watches feature crystals on both the front and back, allowing you to admire the movement from either side.
For our premium models, we use sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating to provide the ultimate in scratch resistance and readability. We believe that using quality materials is essential to creating watches that our customers will be proud to wear and enjoy for years to come.
Other Premium Materials Used by GATTI
While 316L stainless steel and sapphire/mineral crystal are the most important materials, we also use other quality materials:
- Carbon fiber: Used in our sport collection for bezels and dial accents. Carbon fiber is five times stronger than steel while being significantly lighter, and has a distinctive, modern appearance.
- Genuine leather: Our leather straps are made from quality genuine leather in classic colors like black, brown, and blue. Leather straps develop a beautiful patina over time and can be easily replaced to refresh the look of your watch.
- Premium rubber/silicone: Our sport models feature high-quality rubber or silicone straps that are water-resistant, durable, and comfortable for active wear.
- Diamonds: Our women’s collection features carefully selected diamonds on bezels, hour markers, and cases, adding brilliance and luxury.
- Luminous coatings: Our sport and dive-style watches feature luminous coatings on hands and markers for readability in low-light conditions.
Caring for Your Watch’s Materials
To keep your GATTI watch looking its best, follow these material-specific care tips:
For 316L stainless steel:
- Wipe regularly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and smudges
- For deeper cleaning, use mild soap and warm water with a soft-bristled brush, then rinse and dry thoroughly
- Avoid contact with harsh chemicals, chlorine, and saltwater (rinse immediately if exposed)
- Have scratches professionally polished if needed — 316L steel can be refinished multiple times
For sapphire/mineral crystal:
- Wipe gently with a microfiber cloth — avoid pressing hard
- Never use paper towels or abrasive cloths, which can scratch the crystal (especially mineral glass)
- Avoid contact with diamonds and other hard materials that can scratch the crystal
- If the crystal becomes cracked or chipped, have it replaced immediately to prevent moisture from damaging the movement
For leather straps:
- Keep leather straps dry — avoid wearing while swimming, showering, or exercising
- Clean with a dry cloth and condition occasionally with leather conditioner
- Rotate between straps to extend the life of each one
At GATTI, we are committed to using premium materials in every watch we create. From the 316L stainless steel case to the quality crystal, from the carbon fiber accents to the genuine leather straps, every material is chosen for its durability, beauty, and value. We believe that quality materials are the foundation of a great watch, and we are proud to offer watches that combine premium materials with accessible pricing — so you can enjoy the luxury of fine watchmaking without the luxury price tag.
